New Talk forthcoming! The Thesaurer...

17 July 2025

Forthcoming very soon - latest Tay Valley Talk from our President, about the Thesaurer (Treasurer) of Dundee over the centuries. Iain says, 'Lots of names! And women with money - lots of it! And tobacco and wyne being sent to the Governor (Monk) in 1652 to keep him sweet. Not a strong puritan, obviously...'

Previous info on this talk read: 'The Thesaurer and Mr Micawber; "Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds nought and six, result misery," Iain Flett will look at the unsung burgh post of Thesaurer, a position so unpopular among the 17th and 18th century councillors that they had to be forced to perform the office.

There were no books on accounting in Scotland before 1683, and accounts before that time were simply "Chairge" (money coming in) and "Dischairge" (money paid out), so debt inevitably accumulated and there was no way of parking it. He will show examples of the chaos that followed and then look at how, by the 20th century, finance became both professionalised and politicised, with the pre-1975 City Chamberlain on one side and the Chair of the Finance Committee on the other.'

Watch this space for information. Q&A will be on the last Monday of this month, 28th July.
