Welcome to Tay Valley Family History Society

Tay Valley Family History Society was founded in 1980, as the third Scottish regional FHS, and now has strong worldwide membership. We have Research premises at 179-181 Princes Street, Dundee and there extend a welcome to our members. This Centre gives a focus, what we do goes far beyond it.

The Centre is now a FamilySearch Affiliate Library, and so we welcome people to come to our centre to use the FamilySearch facility - visitors as well as our members. (Affiliate libraries have access to many FamilySearch’s digital genealogical collections, that are otherwise accessible only through a FamilySearch centre - including OPRs from the whole of Scotland, and many other resources e.g from Canada, France, USA...)

Come and visit us during the Dundee Doors Open Days - details in the 'News' below!

We have extended our book 'SPECIAL OFFER for Christmas' (as seen in 'News' below and on our Facebook) for a little while longer, in case you've missed it! Best to send us an email directly for this, especially if you can pick the books up in the shop and save postage!)

The Centre is open five days a week.
Please check CONTACT page for details of opening hours. This link is also in the top menu bar

The Society aims to promote the study of family history, genealogy and local history throughout the Tay Valley: the former counties of Angus, Fife, Kinross and Perthshire, and the City and Royal Burgh of Dundee. Our members’ research interests move from stories of highland settlement and migration to the growth of linen and jute trades and the many associated industries in burghs and cities. Tales of hardship, romance or success – all are part of what our members discover.

And if you're new to Family History, or needing a refresher - keep watching 'News' for the details of our Family History Course running from 26th March 2025. Six weeks of 'Beginner' and then three weeks of 'Advanced' class - people can sign up for the Beginner, the Advanced or for both.

Our Journal, The Historian, is published three times a year, with contributions from many members across the world, and we run a series of video talks for members, with a ‘Question and Answer’ session via Zoom so that our international members may participate. Details of current talks are in the ‘News’ section - talks generally have their Q&A sessions on the final Mondays of January, April, July and October. Scroll down this page to News and Events for info.

Our Website is now mostly complete but some parts are still in development. We ask members - if you spot anything that looks not quite right, typos or errors or confusing things, please do let us know (email to the TayValley address, tvfhs@tayvalleyfhs.org.uk) so we can fix it! MEMBERS can log in - use your email address as your login.

The green 'About Us' button below takes you to info about the Society and our history and aims (as does 'About' in the top menu bar). For current things, just keep scrolling down past the 'join' section to News and Events.
