Computer problems

For some days, the Society has had a problem with our Service Provider and the Research Centre has had no connection with the Internet, despite every effort by Members of Council. We hope this problem will be fixed soon and when it is, a notice will be posted here. If you plan to come in to do research which requires access to the Internet, please check on the Website or phone the Centre.

The website is not affected and the Webmaster can access the site and emails from home, though it may take longer than usual to respond to them.

A related problem has prevented our Membership team from processing registrations and renewals. Our apologies go to new members who have not received their membership number and details.

Christmas / New year break.

The Centre will be closed for the festive season from 12 noon on Saturday 20th December 2014 until 10 am on Monday 5th January 2015.

A volunteer in the news

A photo of a familiar face in the Centre on Friday mornings has appeared on a tattoo.  For more details, including a short video, go to The Courier website.

Tay Valley Family History Society continues our series of online talks for our members, of which this is the fifth, Our
newest talk is by our guest Jennifer Jolly, on 'Diana Rae, sea-captain's widow and her family’. Jennifer was researching 'at a distance' using materials online, and she gives much detail about
the resources she used, the places in her story (Montrose, St Cyrus, Edzell), the work of cross-
referencing to check 'facts' and even the way she has organised the materials she found. Lots
of tips here for all family researchers! The story of the research shows how persistence pays off
- and how answering one research question leads on to another! Available at  https://youtu.be/h-NUnNxTkWM

There is a Q&A zoom on this one, for which registration is available on our Members Noticeboard. Passed talks are also available on the Members Noticeboard. For access to this, you will be required to use your members access password to log in.

Also, here is a video from David Dobson, our vice-president, promoting his new book on doing Family History, entitled "Scottish Genealogy: The Basics and Beyond". This is also on Youtube so you can view it at this link: https://youtu.be/lcxAgOFPUCU
